Campania Provincial Museum of Capua Tour

Mater Matuta

This amazing museum, housed in Capua at the Antignano Palace since 1874, is one of the most interesting archaeological museums of the Campania region.

It is known all over the world for the famous “mater matutae” stone statues which date back to the VI century B.C. and which represent women with a baby or a few babies, considered to be goddesses venerated in this area.

Inside the little church dedicated to San Lorenzo ad Crucem, a series of ancient stones, forming the Momsen Ladipary, tells us the story of the lands inhabited long before the Neolithic.
