The Bay of Naples is a true archaeological treasure with many cities, buried during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and then brought to light, which form an immense open-air museum. The Herculaneum and Oplontis tour is one of the most interesting tours to understand the wealth of the Roman families who lived in the Gulf of Naples before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79.
Today we will visit two of the most important ones, Herculaneum and Oplontis, precious testimonies of a rich and refined past.

Meeting point: Ticket office of Herculaneum Archaeological Park.

The first archaeological site we will visit is the buried city of Herculaneum, the first to be unearthed since 1709.
The rediscovered ancient city, nestled on a promontory in the vicinity of the sea, is a unique and remarkable place where we will have the opportunity to see its splendid and rich dwellings, its mosaics, sumptuous frescoes with marvelous perspective paintings and the precious petrified wood bequeathed to us by our ancestors.
Herculaneum, although only partially excavated, is the city that has returned intact a heritage that has no equal in the world.
Tour length: 2 hours
After visiting Herculaneum and a short stop, we will also visit the nearby beautiful town of Oplontis.

The ancient settlement of Oplontis, set in an enchanting panoramic position, in the center of the Gulf of Naples, at the foot of the volcano, was chosen by Poppaea Sabina, Nero’s second wife, to erect there a majestic and splendid villa overlooking the sea.
Currently only part of the sumptuous mansion, which was buried under a thick blanket of different volcanic material, has been brought to light.
Richly frescoed halls, beautiful mosaics, statues, amphorae, and many other finds, some of which have only recently been exhibited in the villa, testify to the richness of the villa.
Gardens, thermal baths, an immense swimming pool give an enormous value to this important imperial residence.
